Web Design: Get Started After Reading These Tips!

It can be both exciting and frightening to design your website, especially if are not very experienced on the subject. Read the tips presented here to find out how easy it can really be to design your own website.

Frames are a holdover from 90′s design elements. Frames were of great use in the early days of web design, but it had a lot of flaws. A website that uses frames can cause trouble for visitors when they try to bookmark a site, and no one wants to spend their time scrolling on a website needlessly. There are much easier ways to provide your users a flow through your website.

Break up long text blocks. Having a huge wave of text is unnecessary for any site, especially when you can break it up by using images, or even separating it into different pages. Boring your viewers will only make them leave, so keep things as simple and fresh as possible.

Avoid creating user interface (UI) controls that mislead your visitors. These controls include elements, widgets and more that create an interactive experience, such as a link, drop-down list or button. You do not want to make visitors think that clicking on an underlined word or phrase for example, will lead to a new page if it is not actually linked to something else. When your visitors have expectations of something working a certain way and it does not, they are more likely to assume there is something wrong with your site and leave.

Make sure that you use the right anchor text. The anchor text of a link should clearly describe what the visitor should expect to see when he clicks on the link. For instance, if a link leads to your widget ordering page, the anchor text might read “Order widgets.” Specifically avoid using “click here” as anchor text.

Keep in mind that you shouldn’t overuse JavaScript. JavaScript does open many doors when it comes to website design, but it can also close the door to your website for some visitors. Each web browser is different, and each has a new version on a regular basis. Many visitors use outdated versions of various web browsers, which means your code might not be supported. Many people turn off Javascript, or disallow it on a site they don’t visit regularly. Both of these mean users will be prevented from using the site you made.

Test your website before it goes live. There’s nothing worse then launching your new website and having to take it down right away due to bugs or other issues. Get a group of people together who are using different web browsers and computer platforms, and ask them to use a beta version of your website, writing down any issues they come across.

Make sure your business logo is well-designed and prominently on every page of your site. Your logo is a key component of your brand, and it should be one of the first things people see when they go to your website. If you can’t come up with a good idea for a logo, there are design firms that will make you one at relatively low cost.

It is a good idea to have an “About Us” page on your site. Most websites don’t have very interesting copy in this area. Make this area of your website more exciting. Let people know about your background and experience, tell them how you started designing websites and show them examples of your achievements.

Look at web design as a fun, exciting way for you to reach out to your target group and promote both your company and your product. When done properly, it can make a huge impact on the effectiveness of your promotional strategy. Don’t wait – these tips will point you toward success.
